If You Want, We Could Make It Real

Caterina

I had signed the contract. As of now, I was Rex’s plaything for the next six months. He had agreed to reduce the time of our arrangement, but he didn’t concede on letting me return to the office. Not that it mattered if he was getting ready to buy the company and sell it for parts. At least now I could talk to Dad and tell him he was free of Rex. The stress of his debt was literally killing him.

“I want to see Dad.”

“Do you understand what’s happening?”

“Sure I do. I’m not an idiot. Somehow, the Society is under attack. And even though Dad and I have nothing to do with it, we’re being targeted just the same.”

He prowled closer to me, and I crossed my arms in front of me. Tonight, his smell had an added hint of danger and sweat. And damn if that wasn’t intoxicating and distracting. Holding my breath, I stepped away, but all he had to do was reach out to bring me back into his circle. How was I going to survive six months of him being this close?

“That’s correct. Except for one thing.” He brushed a strand of hair away from my cheek. “You have everything to do with the Society.”

I glared at him, hoping he could see how much I despised him. “It’s all because of you. This is all your doing.”

“If you need to pretend Michael had nothing to do with your current predicament, fine. I’ll let you be.” His sexy stubble made a scratchy noise when he rubbed his fingers along his jaw. “Are you hungry?”

“No.”

He rolled his eyes. “You will join me for dinner later.”

“I don’t think so. Meals were not in the contract.”

A small win. If I could call it that. But something in his infuriating smirk made want to hurt him with pettiness. He grabbed his phone off the table and tapped on it. “How’s this for items not in the contract?” He showed me the screen. When Nurse Sam appeared, I reached for the device, but he held it at arm’s length. “Your time with me can be as hard or as pleasurable as you make it. Just remember that.”

“Why do you hate Dad so much? I know you’re doing this to hurt him.” I jerked my chin toward the stupid contract.

“I don’t hate him.” His eyes softened. “Not anymore.”

“Ms. Alfera. How are you?” Sam waved at me from the screen and saved me from yet another argument with Rex.

“How is he?” I stepped closer to him, or Rex really, since he was still holding the phone.

“Much better. Do you want to talk to him?”

I nodded with tears brimming my eyes. “Yes, please.”

“Bells, are you okay?” Dad touched a hand to the device. I imagined him brushing my cheek to soothe me. He didn’t look like someone who had almost been murdered. “Sam says the surgery went well. But I still have a long road ahead before I’m back to normal.
